Abstract

Endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) procedures have become im portant alternatives to surgery in patients w ith severe pulmonary emphysema. Patient selection for individual ELVR procedures depends mainly on interlobar fissure integrity and the presence of collateral ventilation, which can be determined by quantitative computed tomography and endoscopic techniques. Advantages of ELVR are its m inim al invasivity (natural orifice procedure), and potentially lower costs. Furthermore, ELVR with valves is a completely reversible procedure. Which LVR procedure is adequate for the individual patient should be further discussed in interdisciplinary boards w ith interventional pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
