Abstract

The article discusses canals existing on planet Mars including the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli who reportedly first observed linear features on Mars during the opposition of 1877, depicting its darker albedo features. He published a new map featuring more refined, linear canals after the 1879 Mars apparition, followed by French astronomer Camille Flammarion who claimed the same about canals. Astronomer Percival Lowell's notions and theories on the same are also discussed.
