Abstract

This article aims to demonstrate that there are some specific design and traffic parameters of roads that, under similar general conditions, have an influence in the occurrence of accidents, together with risk exposure, as main factors, as well as others. The research work focused on the Spanish National toll motorway and highway network, considering accident data from 2006-2010. The most significant result was the consequence of the calibration of logistic regression models for toll motorways; it was shown that, for average daily traffic lower than 10.000 vehicles, White Road Sections (sections without serious accidents) usually happen under average speed lower than 110 km/h, width of lane below 3.5 meters, left shoulder width above 1 meter and less than 5% of heavy vehicles. For average daily traffic between 10.000 and 15.000 vehicles, White Road Sections happen with average speed lower than 110 km/h, road section width bigger higher than 11 meters and less than 6 % of heavy vehicles.
