COMMENT ON NOTE BY CHAPPELL.

The author read John Chappell's comments on an article. Karl Wittfogel, Marxist was certainly attempting to strike a balance between the human and the environmental factors in the development of society. In doing so he was ahead of the general trend of the period, which was to overemphasize the role of physical environment. Thus, the author feels that in context of time that he was writing and in view of his attempts to achieve balance the environmental factors in Marxist analysis, Wittfogel was opposed to environmental philosophy.
