Abstract

Inguinal hernia repair is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in the world. Patients with inguinal hernia are known to have some impairment of sexual functions. A specific complaint is pain-related disability during intercourse and post-herniorrhaptic inguinal or genital pain during ejaculation. It is a systematic review of primary studies with the elaboration based on the checklist Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA). We searched the databases Pubmed, Embase, Lilacs, Scielo, Cochrane Library and Scopus. Six studies were included. It was concluded that preoperative sexual dysfunction - especially pain during sexual intercourse - presents positive results in the patient's view after surgery, but it is a potential risk factor for its recurrence. The primary studies developed to date do not allow conclusive indications with high degrees of recommendation. No articles were found that confront groups of patients submitted to open surgery with laparoscopy. Large studies with large samples in this subject are necessary for responses with high levels of evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
