Abstract

The article addresses the issue of succession planning in Germany as Chancellor Angela Merkel prepares for the final chapters of her chancellorship. It identifies several issues that affected the leadership of Merkel, including a coalition government formed with the Social Democrat party and the capacity of the German state in moments like the refugee crisis. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Jens Spahn are expected to compete as the successor of Merkel.
