Abstract

An essay on the British Empire and the suppression of the slave trade to Brazil in the mid-19th century is presented. Topics include the impact of the British tariff reforms, the different causes of the suppression of the Brazilian slave trade including international diplomatic relations, the social practices of Bantu-speaking African slaves in the Paraiba Valley that allowed for the 1848 slave conspiracy, and the geopolitical conditions sustaining the country's pro-slave trade policy.
