Abstract

In some esoteric doctrines, time is not linear but cyclical, or even experienced as non-existent. This leads to a conception of music as spatial, rather than temporal, and resulting from the interplay of the universal principles of expansion and contraction. Platonic cosmology, based on the principles of the Same and the Different, also manifests in music on various quasi-fractal levels. The postwar avant-garde, especially, fostered the idea of music as a means for transcending time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
