Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of groups which are formed by teacher and student for 'Force and Energy' topic on academic success and attitudes. The study was conducted in quasi-experimental research design in which the data was collected through instruments to explore attitudes towards the course for students along with an academic success tests. Besides, the participants are given the Group Evaluation Form of Ministry of Education. The study was conducted in 2015-2016 academic year with the participation of 34 students from 7th grade. The participants of different classes were divided into groups as the control group (n. 17 each) and the experiment group (n. 17 each). Among these groups, 4 groups are selected as control and 4 are selected as experiment groups. A semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher was conducted with 10 students. According to the findings, there was no significant difference in terms of academic success between various groups of teachers and students. According to the interview results, there was a lack of unity among the members of the groups; the students would prefer to form their groups on their own; also the choices of the teacher was found right; this kind of group work was found beneficial in terms of sharing the knowledge; the students enjoyed working in large groups; the students felt they were wrong in terms of their preferences for group members.
