Abstract

Opioid drug overdose is currently the leading cause of death in the United States. An estimated 91 Americans die from opioid overdoses every day. Opioids are a class of drugs that interact with opioid receptors in the body and brain; they are often used to treat pain. This webliography examines the three classes of opioids – prescription opioids, synthetic opioids like fentanyl, and heroin; reasons for the increased usage of opioids; and resources available to the public. The resources include ways to keep current on opioid-related legislation such as Good Samaritan Laws, information on medical guidelines and community support or treatment, and literature to halt the opioid epidemic.
