Abstract

he study aimed to investigate into the preparedness of Pakistani LIS profession for research endeavors and recommend measures to improve its preparedness for research. The interview guide was prepared and the author conducted interviews with 55 LIS professionals by visiting different cities. Interview data were audio-recorded and analyzed qualitatively to explore the preparedness of Pakistani LIS profession for the research. Qualitative analysis of 55 interviews revealed that majority of Pakistani LIS professionals had obtained formal education or training for conducting research but the teaching of Research Methodology course at master level was seriously flawed. It disclosed that although aptitude for research was necessary but one also needed some skills and abilities to become a successful researcher. Analysis showed that education or training of research and facilities for the same were not issues for LIS research in Pakistan but the quality of research education was an issue. Results revealed that availability of physical facilities was not an issue for LIS research in Pakistan. The study concluded that majority of LIS professionals were not prepared for research work despite the fact that they had obtained research education because they lacked skills and knowledge required to carry out research. The study recommended a number of measures to improve the preparedness of Pakistani LIS professionals for research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
