Abstract

The main aim of this study is to evaluate the functions and dilemmas of Turkish historical novels in nation-building process in the Early Republican Era (1923-1938). Historical novels played a crucial role in the popularization of the regime's perception of the past that was embodied in the Turkish History Thesis. However, features such as being a warrior that would make a novel attractive were needed to be balanced the regime's emphasis on civilization and this created a significant limitation for novelists. In addition, the rise and victories of Ottoman Empire as a fruitful subject for novels could only be embraced with a critical and "national" perspective. This study aims to read novelists' approaches to history and their relations with nation building process in terms of abovementioned limitations as well as their attitudes and syntheses.
