Abstract

This study is a qualitative study investigating how the Village Institutes, the educational institutions operating in rural areas of Turkey between 1940 and 1954, remembered by their graduates. With semi-structured in-depth interviews and document analysis, how the graduates remember their education experience which gave a certain direction to their life stories. The theoretical background is based on the social theories on memory and this study mainly focuses on the interactions with space and habit memory. As a result of this study it is found out that, production of space during their education years through work based education and daily life practices that the graduates have developed during their school years are the most prominent memories.
