Abstract

Gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer represent unique or continuous circumscribed breaks of the continuity of gastric or duodenal wall, accompanied by a fibrous reaction, beginning with the mucosa and being capable of penetrating to the serosa. Ulcers appear when the stomach or duodenal mucosa is chronically inflamed or is exposed to irritating agents, such as the excess of stomach acid or digestive enzymes (pepsin). Peptic ulcers that appear in the stomach mucosa are called gastric ulcers, and those that appear in the duodenal mucosa are called duodenal ulcers, while those affecting the esophagus are calld esophageal ulcers. Diet is meant for gastric sparing and, if correctly prescribed, acts as a real “gastric dressing” for the stomach. Food will be prepared so that it wouldn't increase the gastric acid secretion and would not stagnate in the stomach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
