Abstract

Design of bonded joints from the viewpoint of structural steel engineering. Using bonded joints different issues should be considered: the adhesive bonding systems, taking into account of the substrate and the surface conditions, the design considering permanent and transient actions and the fabrication of the bonding. All of these issues have impact on the reliability often being challenged. One reason is the fact that the real mechanical material behaviour is not considered correctly, so that in practice the calculation results are deviating from the real ones yielding to high safety factors. This paper shows calculation approaches relevant for the structural engineer. Furthermore, options are discussed how hyperelastic as well as elastoplastic descriptions of the adhesive's mechanical behaviour, based on the stress-state, can be transformed from the energetic formulation into a more familiar equilibrium oriented formulation.
