Abstract

A survey amongst former students of four Centres for Special Needs Education and Counselling (sonderpädagogischen Bildungs- und Beratungszentren, SBBZn) with speech and language disorders resulted in a very high level (97 %) of students saying that they were very happy with the education received at the Centre. 126 former students responded to the survey. Students with speech and language disorders achieve a comparable level of qualification as the overall population if the required support is available, according to this study. With regard to communication, the participation experience is positive. Only rarely do students still feel impaired with respect to their communicative skills. Former students with speech and language disorders look critically at inclusive settings. To ensure the success of inclusive educational offerings they highlight the following elements as particularly important: highly qualified teachers, individual support in class, small classes, appropriate resources of personnel (for example teachers for team-teaching) and of rooms (including acoustic optimisation of classrooms), as well as ensuring acceptance and respect on behalf of fellow students.
