Abstract

The article discusses the sensory aspects of early modern Lutheran culture. Topics include the historiography of sensory culture, the impact of orthodoxy on Lutheran sensory culture, and the significance of the ringing of a church bell in Ulm, Germany in relation to Lutheran theology. Different views of the sense of smell by businessman Joseph Furttenbach the Elder and town superintendent Conrad Dieterich are noted.
