Abstract

In this paper, it was analyzed to what extent the current process of selecting students for entering Cuban higher education institutions contributes to the selection of white students and students whose parents are university graduates, professionals or managers. The study included senior high school students from the whole country, who applied to universities in the 2013-2014 school year, as well as 74 % of those who didn't. While the process does contribute to the selection of students having the above mentioned characteristics, it begins after they have finished secondary school. Additionally, reasons why students didn't want to enter any higher education institutions in this school year were examined. The main reason was that they wanted to have a job instead; secondly, they said that they didn't feel trained enough to pass entrance examinations and that they had few opportunities to study for degrees they liked the most, and finally, that they had no motivation to attend any universities.
