Abstract
- With Dutch as the dominant language, spoken Frisian is under severe pressure in the province of Fryslân. This paper looks at changes in the Frisian verb cluster grammar and focuses on constructions with three verbs that potentially display an IPP-effect. In both Dutch and Standard Frisian, only one cluster form is grammatical and these are each other's opposites in terms of word order and (lack of) IPP-effect. Secondary school pupils that we tested show on a grammaticality judgement task that they accept quite a few word orders, with or without IPP-effect, most of which are ungrammatical in both Dutch and Frisian. This paper addresses the question of how these 'new' forms come into existence and looks at parameter theory for an answer. In addition, we argue that extra-grammatical factors are responsible for the fact that some cluster forms are more popular than others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
