ДО ІСТОРІЇ ДОСЛІДЖЕНЬ ІЗ ТЕОРЕТИЧНОЇ ФІЗИКИ У ЛЬВІВСЬКІЙ ПОЛІТЕХНІЦІ

The origin and development of teaching and research in theoretical physics at the Lviv Polytechnic for the period from 1922 to 1933 is studied. The role of theoretical physicists of the Polytechnic in the development of physical research and training in post-war Poland and Ukraine is shown. The paper contains short biographical sketches of Professor Wojciech (Adalbert) Rubinowicz, who headed the Chair for Theoretical Physics at the Lviv Polytechnic, as well as of his students: Jan Blaton, Roman Stanisiaw Ingarden, and Wasyl (Bazyli) Milianczuk. All of them are known not only for scientific achievements, but also for organizational activities. іп particular, Jan Blaton (1907-1948) contributed to the organization of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. Roman Stanislaw Ingarden (1920-2011) spend a major part of his life, from 1966 to 1991, at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun; he also was a founder of the journal Reports in Mathematical Physics (in 1970). Wasyl Milianczuk (1905-1958) headed the Department for Theoretical Physics at the University of Lviv in 1945-58. He is the only link between pre- and post-WWII traditions of theoretical physics in Lviv as a whole and at the University of Lviv in particular. Prof. Milianczuk was also one of the founders of the Lviv school of spectroscopy. The bibliography of works in theoretical physics at the Lviv Polytechnic from the period of 1922-1933 is presented. The list counts thirty titles. The papers mostly concern one of Rubinowicz's primary research fields, quantum theory of radiation. More specifically, the topics include the theory of diffraction, Zeeman effect, multipole radiation, “forbidden” lines, etc. Professor Rubinowicz also authored several popular scince papers.
