Abstract

Cosmetic genital surgery on intersex children has been the target of criticism for more than two decades now. Since 2005 international and national medical guidelines have been gradually revised. Has the clinical practice changed accordingly so that the controversial surgeries are on the decline in Germany? Using the diagnosis-related group (DRG) data on genital surgeries carried out in German hospitals from 2005 to 2014, the author analyzed in a detailed study (Klöppel, 2016) the frequency of feminizing and masculinizing genital surgeries on children under 10 years of age who had been diagnosed with variations of physical sex characteristics. The present article is based on this larger study, which determined that the relative frequency of feminizing and masculinizing genital surgery on intersex children has not declined since 2005.
