Abstract
- The article discusses the history of humanitarianism in the British colonial Straits Settlements of Singapore, Penang and Melaka, which included efforts to raise funds for victims of war and natural disasters including the eruption of Krakatau in 1883, the South African War of 1899–1902, the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, California. Both European and local and migrant Asian citizens contributed to varied international relief efforts.
