Abstract
- Introduction. Patients with Dual Pathology are characterized by a heterogeneous, more severe and difficult to treat. Due to the frequent association of both pathologies, the existence of common neurobiological pathways is considered. Objective. To review the existing literature on Neurobiology of Dual Pathology Pubmed databases were reviewed using the keywords Dual Disorders, Dual Pathology, co-occurring disorders, concurrent disorders and Neurobiology or Neurobiological aspects, to know the latest advances in this regard. Only articles dealing with the subject and texts dealing with the specific topic Neurobiology of Dual Pathology were included. Theme development. The present article describes that the relationship between mental disorders and substance use disorders is explained by common shortfalls in the dopaminergic, glutamatergic, opioid, endocannabinoid, cholinergicnicotinic neurobiological systems. Conclusions. The biological pathways of vulnerability described play a central role in the development of both pathologies, possibly resulting from common alterations in neurodevelopment. This approach of common neurobiological pathways will open new fields of research on the pathophysiology of Dual Pathology and provide new targets for its prevention and treatment.
