Abstract

Brazil has a low participation of women in elective positions, little more than a tenth. This is a critical condition for a representative democracy. Among the structural determinants of this phenomenon is electoral financing. This paper investigates the participation of women in the financing networks of the 2014 elections in Brazil. The results show that the relations between the political agents produce an asymmetric and selective destination of those financial resources, constituting a structural dynamics of exclusion and marginalization of the women in the arenas of the power in Brazil. Based on data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), we organized a relational database and used the methodology of social network analysis and multivariate statistical treatments to explore the 220,325 relationships recorded among 185,255 funders, party agents and candidates in the 2014 elections.
