Abstract

In the midst of a society seeking to redefine itself in an antagonistic social context, the decade of the 1860s found the nuns of Santa Catalina de Sena in Buenos Aires making their voices heard as they challenged the hegemonic discourse by composing a series of poems. Desirous of honoring the aspirants who had chosen the sacred life of the cloisters, they wrote to express, define, explain and free themselves; to socialize and create beauty. The aim of this paper is to understand the underlying meaning of the forms of their poetic expression and analyze this exceptional approach to writing in the context of Hispanic American nunneries in the 19th century.
