Abstract
- A literary criticism of the nineteenth-century novel "The Squatter and the Don," by Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton, is presented. It considers how the work depicts racism and patriarchy through its characterization of white women social reformers among Mexican Californians and Native Americans of California. It also considers social class, the other, and womanhood.
