Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the relation between physical activity level, body mass index (BMI) and the health concept of High School students in the city of Ipanema - MG. The collect was carried out through three moments: application of a questionnaire in order to verify the level of physical activity, stature and body mass collect, and application of an infographic in order to verify the health concept. Two hundred and forty-one (241) students took part in the study (age: 15.8 ± 0.9 years, body mass: 57.2 ± 7.7 kg, stature: 1.62 ± 0.07 m), of which 14.5% were overweight/obese. Most of the sample was considered physically active (156 ± 85.0 min/week of participation in physical activities). There was no statistically significant difference in BMI between the sexes. However, the boys presented a higher level of physical activity compared to girls. Only male students presented a positive correlation between the level of physical activity and BMI. It was observed a health concept more related to prevention in physically active students (64.4% vs. 25.5%) and more related to treatment in insufficiently active students (74.5% vs. 35.6%). We concluded that male students have a higher level of physical activity, once there was relation with BMI and preventive health concept. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
