Abstract
- An essay is presented on the paintings of the Gulzarbagh opium factory in Patna, India that depict the many tasks of opium processing in the 1850s. It examines how the labor vignettes provide insight into Indian art production of the period. It looks at the practices of the artists of these paintings including Shiva Lal. It also draws from two texts illuminating the labor processes, such as a pamphlet by W.C.B. Eatwell and a note written by doctor Robert Lyell.
