Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the novel Bello animal (2002), written by Colombian author, Fanny Buitrago. Based on contributions from Beatriz Preciado, R.W. Connell, Sayak Valencia, Santiago Castro Gómez, among others, this analysis focuses on the four male main characters of the story and demonstrates the existence of a change in the construction of masculinity as the result of the emergence of a media-globalized society and the breakdown of the disciplinary systems of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. Additionally, the analysis shows the consolidation, always in tension with other types of masculinity, of a hegemonic transnational masculinity in present Latin American societies. Finally, this paper reiterates the need to rethink the concept of hegemonic masculinity as a hybrid block where local, regional and global plans constantly interact, and to analyze how the strengthening of capitalism jeopardizes certain masculinities.
