Abstract

The article focuses on the musical success of a jazz singer Bobby McFerrin. As a compliment goes, McFerrin is blessed with a great voice, his presence is classified as "beatific," which seems right; alone on an empty stage, handsome and slight and with the eyes of a nearsighted doe, he looks daffy and monastic. Except for one or two gospel numbers his music is not overtly religious. When he mimics a steel band or a bebop quintet he may be lampooning it, but with affection. He licks the music into better shape than ever.
