The civil engineering in ENPC enjoys a high reputation in the world. The GERMES Laboratory performs experimental, theoretical and numerical researches in soil and rock mechanics, and the lab maintains the world leading status in the field of unsaturated soil. This paper describes the characteristics of CERMES Laboratory in five aspects, including hardware construction, technical team building, management system construction, cooperation between university and enterprises, and security measurement. Through comparative analysis, the problems existing in the construction of the counterpart laboratories in China are indicated, and combing with the operation and management experience of CERMES Laboratory, some suggestions are put forward. This research has some reference values in improving the construction level of civil engineering laboratories in China and making them better serve the teaching and scientific research.
