Abstract

Squealing of railway block brakes is an annoying noise phenomenon for passengers, staff and residents of railway lines and stations. Compared to squealing of automotive or railway disk brakes there are almost no scientific publications with respect to this topic. The present paper shows the results of vibration tests performed with railway block brakes at freight wagons. Therefore, wagons equipped with cast iron, LL and K brake shoes were investigated with experimental modal analysis and operational modal analysis. Also noise measurements were performed. Possible influences of the preload by the weight of the vehicle on resonance frequencies and vibration shapes of the wheels are investigated via Finite Element Analysis and possible modifications of the railway block test rig at TU Berlin are discussed.
