Abstract

Nowadays, transportation is the most important activity that has gathered settlements in terms of economy and human. We cannot accept the transport activity as a factor existing only physically in one area. Because the transport activity produces huge effects on settlements in terms of human through the agency of both land and sea and air transports. The most considerable effect is settling – population. İstanbul, the biggest “Mega City” in our country, is conuenient for road haulage because of its topographical conditions. The D100 motorway and the TEM highway, extending from east to west across the city, affect the residential areas along their paths with regard to facilities such as industry, trade, settling and population. This interaction is significantly seen especially in Silivri, Büyükçekmece and Beylikdüzü of which the populations have started to increase rapidly, distanced approximately 60-80 kilometres from the city centre. At the same time, this study analysing the relationship between the countries located on the shares of the Marmara Sea with the highway route has been evaluated in the light of 15 years’ population data.
