Abstract

The article discusses issues related to air pollution and greenhouse gases caused by ships. It is noted that most ship stack gases are high in sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon particulates and heavy metals. It is noted that regulations for ship-caused pollution have been developed by the International Maritime Organization in 1973. It is stated that use of cleaner fuels, efficient new engines, better maintenance and slower ship speeds can also result in cleaner stack gases.
