Abstract
- From 1944 to 1964, the Francoist regime recognized 99 films, most of them Spanish productions, with the award of ‘Interés Nacional’ (National Interest). The analysis of these titles has traditionally focused on their position within a set of measures controlling and monitoring the national production. However, the awarded films also offer a reflection of what the regime considered a Spanish ‘tradition of quality’ in which industrial, ideological, and aesthetic aspects came together. The evolution observed during those twenty years also reflects the conflicts and tensions that characterized other contemporary cinemas and led to the emergence of the different New Waves in the late 1950s and 1960s.
