Abstract

Rosa damascena Mill. called Isparta rose or oil rose, is the most economically important rose species among other fragrant rose species cultured in the world and its essential oil was used in perfumery, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries due to having for intense and pungent scent. Oil rose was mostly cultivated in Turkey, in Lake Region. In this review, it was summarized the tissue culture studies on Rosa damascena having economic importance as well as traditional prestige plant for Turkey. Based on the review, it was demonstrated that the majority of the tissue culture studies of oil rose were focused on micropropagation while the studies conducted on in vitro secondary metabolite production and breeding were neglected. Additionally, in spite of being the most important country for oil rose cultivation and rose oil trade in the world, there has not been given the necessary interest to the tissue culture studies in our country. However, it is of great importance to study on different tissue culture techniques such as micropropagation, breeding, secondary metabolite production, disease-free plant production in oil rose in terms of development of our oil rose cultivation.
