Abstract

The article discusses American inventor Abner Doble, his steam-engine automobiles, and his automotive companies. He was born into a wealthy family in San Francisco, California, and attended college at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His first company Doble-Detroit Steam Motors, by General Engineering Company, failed when World War I started. After the death of brother John in 1923, the remaining group of brothers Abner, Warren, and William Doble founded Steam Motors Corporation of San Francisco, which also failed.
