Since textbooks have become quite important within the Brazilian education system in recent years, there is growing concern in making such resource more appropriate to students' understanding. Thus, the following study proposes a number of criterion that can be used by biology teachers, regarding the characteristics of living beings. Three textbooks, based on nine classification criterion, were used.
