Abstract
- The longstanding battle over the place of religion in public schools is heating up again.Thirty years after the Supreme Court prohibited prayer in the classroom, religious conservatives want more religious activities in public schools. They are testing the Supreme Court's new decision to bar prayers at public high school graduations and seeking seats on local school boards. Civil liberties groups have responded by fighting in court and at the ballot box to keep schools from taking sides on religious issues. But courts have somewhat lowered church-state barriers in recent years. Now, a new case before the Supreme Court gives the justices another chance to define the relationship between religion and the schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
