Abstract

The article traces the sources of the quotations found in "A Garden of Tulips," a section of the commonwealth miscellany "The Mysteries of Love and Eloquence" edited by Edward Phillips. Topics discussed include the number of quotations by dramatists William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson included in the section and the author's assertion that all the quotations in "A Garden of Tulips," except one, came from a single source, "The English Treasury of Wit and Language" compiled by John Cotgrave.
