Abstract
- The article discusses the 1806 military expedition mounted and led by Venezuelan revolutionary Francisco de Miranda which sailed from New York City to Venezuela with the purpose of overthrowing its Spanish colonial rule. Topics include the administration of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, foreign relations between the U.S. and Spain following the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, Miranda's friendship with American politician William Stephens Smith. Details of Miranda's involvement in international affairs including the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Nootka Sound controversy are provided.
