Abstract

The article presents a case study of a 10-year-old girl in Kokourou, Niger who was infected by livestock-specific schistosomes through hybridization and introgression of Schistosoma (S.) bovis with S. curassoni. It states that Schistosoma eggs were recovered from the urine of the child, and mitochondrial and nuclear DNA regions of larvae were analysed. It discusses how hybrid livestock:livestock schistosomes can infect humans, and public health concerns due to hybridization of parasites.
