Abstract

In this globalized society, the healthcare delivery system is facing several ethical and legal challenges. Given the culturally diverse population in the US, attempts have been made to ensure culturally competent healthcare is provided to minorities, particularly to recipients whose English is a Second Language. Most of the academic literature reviewed addresses the need and the process of providing culturally sensitive health services from the perspective of the healthcare providers. However, there is less literature on how the recipients of healthcare services perceive the services they are given. This study sought to assess culturally competent healthcare services from the perspective of recipients whose English is a Second Language. A patient-based approach was used to evaluate the literature available. ESFT (explanatory/social/ fears/treatment) model which focuses on the concerns of health recipients and promotes solutions for them was used. The findings include recommendations for patient-based healthcare practices for minority healthcare recipients. This study has implications for higher education, research and practice.
