Abstract

BACKGROUND: Actinic prurigo is an idiopathic dermatoses that affects the mestizo population, in the actinic prurigo cheilitis it has been described a dense lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate that can form lymphoid follicles, il also has been identified macrophages, eosinophils and mast cells. The aim of this investigation was to identified besides the lymphoid follicles, the major histopathological features found in the actinic prurigo cheilitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It is a descriptive study conducted in the dermatopathology department of the General Hospital Dr. Manuel Gea Gonzalez in Mexico City. Samples of parafin embedded tissue of actinic prurigo cheilitis with a confirmed diagnosis with hematoxylin and eosin were included (208 cases). The assessment of the cases was carried out by two pathologists previously standardized, the database was developed with the statistical program SPSS versión 20, Inc., Chicago, II ., EE.UU. Descriptive Statistics were performed. RESULTS: Of all the included cases, 201 of them (96.6 %) presented changes in the epithelium of the vermilion, and a 100% showed some kind of alteration in the lamina propria. 110 samples (52.9 %) had some degree of ulceration, there was presence of inflammatory infiltrate and epitelial changes related to it. CONCLUSIONS: To perform the diagnosis of this condition, clinicopathological correlation is required, when lesions are formed in lip, this must be the place where the taking of the biopsy must be done, the presence of a cheilitis spongiosis, eosinophils exocytosis, dense inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes (perivascular disposition, lichenoid, nodular or lymphoid follicles) arc indicative of actinic prurigo cheilitis.
