Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to make a probable comparison between the conditions of Igdiç (Selimaga) village in the 1840s and the present time by using the temettüat registers in order to show the changes in the socioeconomic, cultural and demographic aspects of the village. Since, the temettüat registers contain very rich data regarding almost all of the characteristics of socio-economic life such as demography and agricultural economy. It is possible to get information on taxpayers' names, nick-names and occupations. 'Thus, it became easy to trace recent family and occupational histories at least 150 years back. For this paper the temettüat register of the Igdiç village (Balikesir-Dursunbey) was used. It is registered as ML.VRD.TMT.8388 in the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archives in Istanbul.
