Abstract

This article attempts to understand how "school" and "family" mediations work in teenagers with regard to book consumption and reading. It discusses the use and ownership of the book, as a media product, through cultural studies, especially from the perspective of mediations (Martín-Barbero) and sociocultural consumption (Canclini). This is a reception study with teens from a public school in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. In terms of method, ethnographic techniques were employed, such as participant observation, informal conversations, field diaries, questionnaires, and interviews. The importance of mediations was observed both in terms of stimulating the reader's behavior and in book consumption. Even immersed in the technological context, the relationship with the printed book is intense. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
