Abstract

Managing roads infrastructure and monitoring conditions of a road surface are important problems for every community. The standards, organizational structures and mechanisms to manage road facilities vary widely across countries. The study presents a reliable methodology for investigation of road failures using Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) and mobile systems. Our research was implemented in one district in Warsaw, the biggest Polish city. The main components of the proposed system are spatial database and mobile application. The gathered data (classified as damage of road surface, ruts, cracks, etc.) was analyze and visualize using GIS. The result showed that road failures are a major problem. The number of notifications and spatial distribution of failures significantly affect deterioration in road safety. The final conclusions showed that the designed system can be an effective tool for acquisition of up-to-date, reliable data and can have a significant impact on improving road safety and travel comfort.
