Abstract

Objetives: To estimate the risk factors for development of bedsores in hospitalized elderly patients. Material and Methods: Case-control study nested in a cohort which included elderly patients hospitalized in different departments of the HNAAA from March to September 2012. Probability sampling was performed by incidence density, getting 61 cases and 122 controls. We applied an initial data collection sheet and we evaluated each 48 hours. We calculated measures of frequency and association and X2 test was used for qualitative variables. Results: The total amount of hospitalized elderly patients from March to September was 189; the mean of age was 76.8 ± 9.97. The cumulative incidence is 3% and the density of incidence is 45 per 1000 persons/day. In the multivariate analysis of conditional logistic regression risk factors are: age (OR 1.09, CI 95% 1.04 - 1.16, p = 0.001), male (OR 0.38, CI 95% 0.15 - 0.96, p = 0.040), high risk (OR 34.76, CI 95% 5.18 - 233.45, p < 0.001) and very high risk (OR 22.29, CI 95% 3.04 - 163.57, p = 0.002) according to Norton Scale; and Dementia (OR 26.82, CI 95% 2.54 - 282.94, p = 0.006). Conclusions: The variables associated to development of bedsores are: age, male, high and very high risk in the Norton Scale, and dementia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
