Abstract

Botulinum toxin is the product of fermentation of Clostridium botulinum, an anaerobic Gram-positive. Commercially, there botulinum toxin in Forms A and B, biological agents obtained in laboratory. Arguably, the botulinum toxin can selectively weaken painful muscles, interrupting the spasm-pain cycle. With regard to pain, several publications have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin in the treatment of tension-type headache, migraine, chronic back pain and myofascial pain. It has for many years considered a disease promoter. At present it is considered a versatile therapeutic agent for the treatment of muscle disorders. The objective of this study was to demonstrate through a case report the application of botulinum toxin, its effectiveness and its side effects in the treatment of myofascial pain in dentistry. It was concluded that in this case, the botulinum toxin alone was not effective treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
