Abstract

This paper studies the way two USA women writers narrate around historic moments in their country, move these moments in time and space to retell them and then study, analyze, and present them within science fiction conventions (more specifically, "soft" science fiction). The novels analyzed are The Name of the World is Forest by Ursula K. LeGuin and Mirror Dance by Lois McMasters Bujold, the first one related to the Vietnam War and the second to USA slavery. Both use hyperbole to narrate these moments and in both, technology is a very secondary element. The paper also analyzes the books within the debate science fiction/fantasy (understood as related to magic and magicians) and describes the author's position within this debate.
